The Hippopus hippopus clam commonly known as the “Horse’s Spleen” inhabits the warm tropical waters of the Indo-Pacific region. This impressive and unique species of clam is admired for its robust and distinctive shell.
The exterior of the shell is characterized by a series of prominent concentric lines resembling those found on a horse’s hoof or a bear’s leg, and from these it takes its common name. The colouring of the shell can vary from shades of brown to grey, with occasional hints of pink, purple or green.
