How do I calculate burning hours?

Once you have made your candle, it is very important to know the burning time to be sure that you have created a quality product that will last.

Use the following method to find out the burning hours of your candle:

1. Weigh the container of wax & note the result = A.

2. Light the candle 4 hours.

3. Weigh the container with the wax & note again the result = B.

4. Use the formula: A – B = C , where C = the difference in weight of the wax before & after burning.

5. Divide C (the difference in weight) by the 4 hours burned to find D (the consumption per hour).

C/ 4 hours = D , where D = the consumption per hour for the specific wick/wax type.

6. Divide the amount of wax (weight kg) by D (consumption per hour) to find the total burning hours.

Wax weight / D = Burning Hours.

Example:

If you want to calculate the burning time of your candle, there is an easy method to do so.

You will need a scale, your wax, and time to let the wax burn for 4 hours. First, weigh the candle container before lighting it.

Suppose its weight is 520 grams. This is the total weight of the wax (container + wax). Mark this as A.

Then light the candle and let it burn for 4 hours. When the 4 hours have passed, extinguish the candle and weigh it again.

Let’s assume that its weight is now 500 grams. Mark this as B. Subtract B from A to calculate the difference in the weight of the wax before and after burning.

This is the weight of the wax from the 4 hours of burning. That is, A – B = C. In our case, 520 – 500 = 20 grams. Divide C (the difference in weight) by the 4 hours of burning to find the consumption per hour (D). That is, C / 4 hours = D.

In our case, 20 / 4 = 5 grams per hour. Now, calculate the total weight of the wax you used to make your candle in the container. This is the weight of the candle without the container. Let’s assume that this is 200 grams.

Finally, divide the amount of wax (weight) by D (consumption per hour) to find the total hours burned. That is, Wax Weight / D = Burning Hours. In our case, 200 / 5 = 40 hours of burning.
